Sometimes it’s hard to remember that a painting is a whole lot more than a ‘picture’ or an image. I should know better, I really should, but in the digital age we spend so much time allowing our experiences to be mediated by the screen that it is too easy to forget that making compelling experiences is hard work, it takes time, attention and care. I took a few hours last weekend to drop in to the @mfaboston, in well, Boston and spend some time with the actual real deal. It is a HUGE reminder, if not a down right education, to be able to get close up and peer into a painting…taking pictures adds to that as you can push the brightness and contrast around a good bit, ok in ways that may not look great….but as I found with the later dark paintings of Mark Rothko, you can actually see into the layers and brush strokes…the painting over there with 2 shapes? It had three for a time…that deep black shape? Its edges expanded and contracted as it was built. To look deep into the drip of a Pollock, the slashes of a Klein or the complexity of a Picasso is to read deep into the decisions and thoughts of eyes that thought hard about what they wanted to be seen…they made a million decisions and covered up a million more… #mfa #art #artisnotoptional #painting #paintingishard #paintingisnotdead
